by using the failures of his former peoples as examples….

if anything that just shows you how fucked up it was under that umbrella.

and to be quite honest….

nigga hov got just about as many bodies under his belt as diddy when it comes to former artists.

It seems like Diddy…

I’ve always noticed that. That’s why I didn’t even like dude until around 2001. [I still don’t like Puff for the same reason. Dude hit the jackpot with BIG signing bad boy, he hit the lotto with BIG dying a legend, and overstayed his welcome for over a decade after wards… all up in the videos. lol) Jay just won me over with longevity and by out-rhyming the wack “competition” that was in the field from then on. Furthermore, he had a brilliant strategy of making a career off the career itself, not the music. He peeped what Master P was trying to do and did it better (other dudes like Mase did it a bit too) by simply being a smarter person with a multidimensional train of thought. In terms of content, he’s just a sophisticated, nuanced NY version of UGK and Scarface. Had he not been from NY, we probably would have never paid much attention to him or possibly never known who he was. Shit, I didn’t know who he was until Pac started going off on him back in ‘96. Dude’s got rhyme patterns, beats, hustle skills, Beyonce, Kanye, a less threatening presence (than Pac, BIG, DMX, etc.), which grants “crossover appeal,” and a few other things working for him… but that doesn’t change the fact that he sounds like a straight up nerd when he raps. I think we just got used to his voice from so much airplay. Listen to him like you never heard of him. He has a funny voice. For real. Not a good rapper’s voice at all… especially when compared to Pac, BIG, Nas, Rakim, Kool G Rap, Scarface, Pimp C, Snoop, Andre 3000, or even Ice Cube, Big Pun, and Too Short. I used to have that discussion all the time back in days when I used to love hip hop enough to actually follow it and frequently discuss it. His ways are always justified to most by his profits. Many believe that if you don’t agree with that view, then you are a hater. That’s what has probably kept him from seriously being checked.
